This poem by Jean-Pierre Calloc’h, known in Brittany for its various musical settings, has always haunted me.
Born in the middle of the sea, growing and coming from the ocean just as Erda comes from the Earth in Wagner; but also telling the simple life of the island fishermen, the household, Nature and the hazards of life…
In this piece, written for Maya Villanueva and Patrick Langot, I chose to use only the first stanza of this beautiful poem. Coming from the sea, then, the soprano’s sea song, adorned with harmonics from the cello, gradually unfolds into a prayer in which the two performers merge, respond and, more rarely, oppose each other.
It is part of a cycle of works entitled Îles, including the duo Les Îles for violin & cello, and Quanta for soprano, violin, cello & piano.
