Opera-théâtre Metz-Métropole

An opera devoted entirely to Caravaggio, to his singular and violent life in pontifical Rome in the early 17th century, to the light and darkness, the cry and the blood that flow from his canvases – this is the idea that has possessed me ever since I first became fascinated by this painter while living in Rome.

Meeting Dominique Fernandez and discovering his novel, La course à l’abîme, gave rise to the spontaneous and enthusiastic project of writing an opera for the stage that would be the result of our combined passions.

Caravaggio will use a baroque orchestra and voices, a violent action in the image of this life so mysterious, so tormented, and the music, painted, sculpted in this material, in the language and atmosphere that will make a link between the character of yesterday and the emotion of today.
