Selon bruit de guerre…

Despite my Mars sign, I have no fascination for war.
Peace, bliss and universal love, humor, beauty, wisdom and wonder are the energies and meaning of music, it seems to me. I like energy but not war, that goes without saying, like everyone else. And if we think of all the music that works heroically around war, then yes, the only war that speaks to us, through this Art, is obviously the one waged by the Gods of Olympus, up there in the battlefields of the realm of the spirit; Psyche.
François Couperin tells us about this world of sound, populated by cannons, horses, crackling muskets, steel blades and tears, from low to high pitched. Our world is still at war, but the weapons and energies involved have changed irrevocably. Fulgurance, extreme speed, machines of unheard-of complexity, stealth aircraft, lasers, nuclear warhead strategies; a planet that could be totally wiped out several times in a handful of seconds, so extreme are the weapons of our time, to the limits, in a veritable hallucination of firepower; never before has man, in any civilization he has ever crossed, had such destructive power.
So this Selon bruit de guerre…, according to our time as I receive it and live in it; not out of fear of the ultimate conflict but in response to what I feel today of the resonance of the sounds of war of the eighteenth century in the spirit of our planetary civilization today, in the twenty-first century. Right here, right now.
The reality of the living human being is a profound and beneficent peace and wisdom of mind; so anger must help us to resolve injustice, so that the universal pacifism of which the art of music always speaks to us, within our reach, may triumph.
