Music Director of the Orchestre Symphonique Français from 1989 to 1996, he was elected Music Director of the Orchestre Colonne by the musicians in December 2004, and his contract was renewed until June 2020.

Laurent Petitgirard has made some thirty recordings, including Honegger’s “Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher” and “Gaspard de la Nuit” (Ravel-Constant), for which he conducted the premiere.

His first opera, “Joseph Merrick dit Elephant Man”, with libretto by Eric Nonn, was recorded with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and Nathalie Stutzmann (Naxos). Premiered in February 2002 at the Prague State Opera, directed by Daniel Mesguich, the opera was revived at the Opéra de Nice in December 2002 (DVD Marco Polo).
A new production, directed by Doug Varone, was presented in May 2006 by the Minneapolis Opera.

Subsequent works include “Le Fou d’Elsa”, for alto voice and orchestra, “Le Plus Ardent à Vivre” (septet with harp), “Poème pour grand orchestre à cordes” and “Les Douze Gardiens du Temple” (commissioned by Radio-France, premiered under his direction by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg at the “Présences” Festival and recorded by the Orchestre National de France).

His second opera, “Guru” (dealing with mental manipulation and sectarian aberrations), on a libretto by Xavier Maurel, was recorded in Budapest in October 2010 for the Naxos label, with Hubert Claessens (bass-baritone) and Sonia Petrovna (actress) in the two lead roles (Choc du mois de Classica September 2011). The opera suite “Guru et Marie” based on this work premiered in 2014 in Neubrandenburg, Germany, (French premiere in March 2016 at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées). The complete opera will premiere in October 2017 at the Castle Opera in Szczecin (Poland), directed by Daniel Mesguich and conducted by the composer. Hubert Claessens, Sonia Petrovna and Philippe Do will take part in this creation.

For Naxos, Laurent Petitgirard has also recorded three of his symphonic poems, “Daphnis et Chloé”, a full-length ballet by Maurice Ravel, as well as a CD devoted to his three concertos “Dialogue pour alto et orchestre” (Gérard Caussé), Concerto pour violoncelle et orchestre,(Gary Hoffman) and “Le Légendaire” for violin choir and orchestra, (Augustin Dumay).

His latest works include “Le Petit Prince”, original music for the show conceived and directed by Sonia Petrovna for the Avignon, Reims and Compiègne operas (released on CD on the Naxos label in August 2013), “Etats d’âme” for alto saxophone and orchestra, the symphonic poem “Solitaire”, commissioned by MNL (premiered in Paris in March 2015) and “Bribes”, Trio for alto saxophone (or clarinet) cello and piano (premiered on July 1, 2017 at the “Tons Voisins” Festival in Albi.
Most of his works are published by Editions Durand-Universal, others by Editions OSF Productions and Editions Mario Bois (BMB).

On February 15, 2013 at Moscow’s Orchestrion Hall, Laurent Petitgirard conducted the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra in a concert devoted entirely to his music, with the participation of contralto Delphine Galou performing the cycle “Le Fou d’Elsa”. The concert was filmed for the Mezzo channel.
He conducted the orchestra again in Moscow in April 2016.

For film and television, Laurent Petitgirard has collaborated with Otto Preminger, Jacques Demy, Francis Girod, Peter Kassovitz, Pierre Schœndœrffer, Claude Danna, Jean-Claude Brialy, Jean Larriaga, Patrick Timsit, Laurent Heyneman, Michel Boisrond, Denis Amar, Pierre Granier Deferre, Bernard Queysannes, Alain Tasma, Pierre Joassin, Charles Nemes, Jacques Fansten, Florian Gallenberger, Edouard Niermans….
His last three film music CDs are devoted to Francis Girod’s film music, the music for the “Maigret” series (Play-Time EMI) and the film “John Rabe” (Milan).

From January 2013 to June 2015, Laurent Petitgirard directed the first cycle of music to image at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.
Since 2013, he has been artistic director of the Ramatuelle classical evenings.

Laurent Petitgirard received the Grand Prix Lycéen des Compositeurs 2000 and the Prix Musique 2001 from the SACD.
He has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 2000, and has chaired the Sacem Board of Directors on numerous occasions.

Laurent Petitgirard is Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, Officier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite and Commandeur des Arts et Lettres.

He is married to actress Sonia Petrovna and has a son, Tristan Petitgirard, author, director and actor.
