Et Lux

Et Lux in tenebris lucet is an extract from St. John’s prologue, meaning “and light shone in the darkness”. It thus refers to these two notions of light and darkness, which I have tried to set to music in different ways. The use of timbre, of the voice’s register, of complementary or sometimes opposing motifs, of specific intervals, are all explorations of this work on setting a visual element to music.
The form of the work follows entirely the syntax of the phrase: the elements of light are exposed, before those of darkness. Then the word “lucet” transcends these elements into brighter, more brilliant sounds. The piece ends with the high strings alone, in harmonics, with a luminous motif recomposed from those presented earlier. Then it gradually fades away…
This light/dark dialectic allows us to project St. John’s work and prologue into our own time and society. Whatever the difficulties, the fears, the violence that surround us, a glimmer of hope should always enable us to rise and help us to move forward.
