Sonidos

This piece was composed specifically for a concert in October 2025 in Santiago, Chile, with the aim of bridging Chile, France, and Pre-Columbian art.
The inspiration for this work came from hearing the resonant tones of the piloilo, an ancient stone Pan flute housed in Santiago’s Museum of Pre-Columbian Art.
In Sonidos, a wind instrument–whether a Western concert flute, recorder, slide flute, Pan flute, ocarina, or other confronts a string quartet.
The flute’s simple, obsessive calls contrast with the quartet’s dense, dramatic, and richly textured writing. Yet, these two worlds never cease to engage in dialogue and response.
