Caraïbes, for two cellos was written in August 2019 and is dedicated to Emmanuelle Bertrand and Patrick Langot. It is a work which, as its name suggests, pays tribute to the music of these islands, in particular to a well-defined musical style, the Bèlè, which is a musico-choreographic practice from Martinique combining song, music, dance and storytelling.

Here, I’ve used certain Bèlè rhythms and the interplay between soloist and chorus that is characteristic of this genre. The piece begins with a declamation that sets the rhythm, evoked here by very specific modes of playing: tapping on the drum, playing behind the bridge…
In my opinion, the two cellos here form a single instrument, both percussive and melodic, a kind of tribute to the music of these men and women from across the Atlantic.
