This work for string quartet was composed with the concept of color found in nature in mind. Chromatophores are cells located in the derme, the skin of humans and animals, which give color to the skin of living beings. These cells are often discussed in relation to chameleons, as these reptiles can change their color to blend into their. surroundings or to stand out distinctly in the landscape.
To translate this into music, I worked throughout the piece on two types of colors:
The harmonic or modal color and the color of the different playing techniques of string instruments.
Thus, the melody that gradually appears in canon at the beginning of the work is omnipresent while being presented in different contexts. This modifies the overall color of the music, either through harmonic or modal transformations or through the use of specific playing techniques.
This piece then raises a societal and identity question: Should one blend into the background or stand out? If so, in what context? There is no doubt that the chameleon faces this duality in its environment. It seems to me that the same is true for us humans in our societies.
