En Résonance… was commissioned by Orchestre de Bretagne and composed in March 2013. It is dedicated to the conductor Darrell Ang.
This piece offers a contemporary resonance to a work by Breton composer Guy Ropartz (1864-1955) entitled Sons de Cloches.
Having written a biography of this composer in 2005 – Joseph-Guy Ropartz ou Le Pays inaccessible, collection Mélophiles, Éditions Papillon – in collaboration with Mathieu Ferey, I was particularly stimulated by this project, which enabled me to pay tribute to the memory of this great musician.
Although this piece does not contain any quotations from Ropartz’s music, it does convey a personal feeling for the spirit of his music, imbued with meditation and irradiated by Breton nature. En Résonance… is a slow procession, a study in colors, from which emerges a maritime atmosphere typical of the landscapes of North Finistère.
