Quand il jette en dansant son bruit vif et moqueur,
Ce monde rayonnant de métal et de pierre
Me ravit en extase, et j’aime à la fureur
Les choses où le son se mêle à la lumière.
Charles Baudelaire, Les Bijoux in Les Fleurs du mal – 1857
That’s it.
All is said.
Charles Baudelaire, in this poem from Les Fleurs du Mal, sums up exactly what – according to my desire as well as my profession, my passion for the craft of writing, of visible listening – makes deep and natural sense in this new work
for string quartet.
The fury of ecstasy, whether mystical or otherwise: there is no more beautiful instrument to witness this than the string quartet.
Sixteen strings under tension to translate the electric, the flow, the lyric vertigo or the pyromaniac silence. The perfection
of the gesture, its organic articulation, its energy of abyss as of zenith, its line-vector of the radiant breath then the bow fusing on the wire of the burning metal, of ice or lava, that opens the big door filled with fury and mystery of what we call ecstasy.
This work is dedicated to the Diotima Quartet.
