For Roger

For Roger was commissioned by Seth Knopp, director of the Yellow Barn Festival in Vermont, as a tribute to the late Juilliard Quartet
violist Roger Tapping. The initial melody is inspired by the one that opens the Elegy for viola, which Stravinsky composed to honor the
memory of the founder of the Arte Quartet.
Much of the piece is written in heterophony, with the second viola playing the same melodic line as the first, but slightly out of sync and with
slight variations in notes and rhythms. The two instruments thus seem to be constantly seeking to unite, but without finding unison. At regular
intervals, however, they come together in perfectly homophonic sequences that sound like hymns.
