The idea of writing for a chamber orchestra with woodwinds as soloists came to me while listening to the “Vents français” at a concert in the south of France. The transportation to the distant lands of northern Europe then came to me with this “spread out”, hovering and calm vision of this part of the western world.
At no point does the piece develop an idiomatic virtuosity for the woodwinds, but rather rapid flourishes at a slow tempo.
The presence of the harp and the marimba, with clear attacks to define the contours of the harmonies, allows for an even more extensive resonance.
It is not a symphonie concertante for wind quintet, to use a form that was very popular after the French Revolution until the middle of the 19th century, but rather an assemblage of very characteristic timbres allowing for a fusion and a series of alliterations within the orchestra.
