Les Sons dessinés

A suite of 19 duets for violin, Les Sons dessinés was commissioned by the CRR de Paris for the Journées du violon 2015, based on an idea by Stéphanie Moraly and Suzanne Gessner, the work’s dedicatees and violin teachers at the institution. The premiere took place on March 27, 2015, by students in the violin classes of the CRR de Paris. Although not technically progressive in chronological order, these duets alternate simple pieces that can be played from the first cycle through to the specialized cycle. They can be played on their own, but their sequencing as a whole responds to several structural and formal logics. For me, they respond to the desire to bring together students of very different levels within the same cycle. In Les sons dessinés, I wanted to have fun, as a child does, inventing little stories, little worlds whose title reveals the initial idea.                                Benoit Menut
