L’Hippocampe

At the beginning of the summer of 2022, I received a proposal for a concert of my chamber music works for violin and cello in connection with the exhibition on Jean Painlevé at the Jeu de Paume (Paris).
When I discovered the work of this scientist, filmmaker and photographer, I was struck by the musicality that emerged from it and was particularly attracted by the photograph entitled L’Hippocampe. I therefore decided to write this Hippocampe for solo violin, for Stéphanie Moraly.                                                                                                                  It is a cadence, then a dance, containing snatches of gavotte, a set of arpeggios that are increasingly present, representing what I perceive as an inner swarming in this animal.
I later learned that a filmmaker like Godard was also inspired by this photograph.
Its magical, timeless quality is undoubtedly a major factor.
