Edward Lear was, before Lewis Caroll, the master of Victorian British nonsense. Years after the success of his Book of Nonsense (1848), he published the Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany, and Alphabets (1871). Here, one can find – reminiscent of the famous The Owl and the Pussycat – the lovely bird story, Mr. and Mrs. Spikky Sparrow. The poet – also a painter and musician – shows his taste for sound colors in the ever renewed refrain.
This setting was commissioned by the Autour du Ventoux festival and first performed on August 4th, 2018 in Vaison-la-Romaine, by Benoît Menut and the composer.
This piece is suitable for solo singer as well as for unison choir – and the audience can also be asked to sing the chorus!
