The hymn to Nikkal, in the Hourrite language, engraved on a clay tablet discovered in present-day Syria, is the oldest example of musical notation discovered in the world (around 1400 BC).
Several musicologists, including Marcelle Duchesne-Guillemin, have attempted to reconstruct the melody and rhythm of this hymn. I drew some of my inspiration from this work.
Karine Lethiec commissioned this piece, which was premiered at her Autour du Ventoux festival.
