Quatuor à cordes nº 1

In 2011, I invited the Tana Quartet to play my first two string quartets. They took to these scores with astonishing determination and creativity. In the wake of these concerts, they commissioned the third quartet, which naturally concludes this triptych. These first three quartets are, in fact, a single work, which uses a common material in different ways.
Classically constructed, this score makes ample reference to the great string quartet repertoire. Its consonant and, at times, even romantic aesthetic is the first variation of a material that I will later consider in a very different way.
