Appreciating mountain landscapes for their preservation and their atmosphere conducive to serenity and meditation, this commission was an opportunity for me to work on an element common to nature and music: the notion of relief. Indeed, nature always offers us many reliefs. The succession of mountains of various sizes and at different distances from each other, the trees on the mountains that form waves of greenery in an almost pointillist spirit, the clouds that dot the sky, and the stars that reveal themselves at night are all reliefs that I wanted to set to music. This work for organ is the result of this project.
The organ is an instrument that consists of several sound planes that can be mixed or contrasted to create this impression of relief. A 4-note motif is thus presented at the beginning of the work, first harmonically, then melodically. It is varied throughout the piece, both in its permutations and in its sound colors, thus giving rise to a wide variety of musical accents. These musical notes, with their different colors and dynamics, create a “soundscape” that is both very coherent and very varied.
The registrations indicated refer to the organ of Gap Cathedral. However, all combinations and progressions should be adapted to the instrument on which the work is performed.
