Santo

This choral piece was written at the request of the Festival Accordanses. Originally intended as part of Yardani Torres Maiani’s Santa Misa Romani, it can be sung separately.
The text is that of the Sanctus of the Mass, in Spanish. It is preceded by an extract from Federico García Lorca’s Romancero gitano, in which the poet sings of the martyrdom and glory of Saint Eulalia.
Santo has several linked parts: the Prologue, mainly for altos, evokes the saint’s death in a style close to Cante jondo. The jubilant Sanctus and Hosanna, punctuated by the ringing of bells, are followed by a Benedictus in a very contemplative mood. A brief reprise of the Hosanna concludes the canticle.
