The title came to me very quickly as I was working on the score. I felt a suspense, even a fear, that was difficult to explain. There’s a certain almost obsessive spirit in several passages of the work, for example the repeated low Bs and Cs that last for quite a long time from the start of the score, as well as the arpeggio-like rise of the euphonium or saxhorn from bars 46 to 76, or the obsessive triplets in the piano at bar 124 that accelerate right up to the end, accompanied by repeated, breathless B-flats.
These few examples are only cited to indicate a certain mood that I would suggest for the performance of this piece.
