Saxo Voce
À Thibaut Canaval

Yodeling (Jodel in german) is a singing technique that involves rapidly switching from the chest voice to the head voice. It is practiced in many parts of the world: in Tyrol, of course, but also in Africa among the Aka Pygmies or in Polynesia.
My piece, like a Tyrolean dance, makes almost constant use of these register jumps. While working on this piece, I remembered an episode from the slow movement of the Quartet in G Major D 887, in which Franz Schubert contrasts registers in an astonishing way. I quote it
quite explicitly (bars 60 to 79).
Yodel was written for the International Saxo Voce Competition 2025 at the request of Thibaut Canaval.
The piece is dedicated to him.
