In this third piece in my piano catalogue, I sought to explore in greater depth the deeply lyrical aspect that this instrument intrinsically possesses. I wanted to treat the piano with the same attention that I pay to a vocal line when writing for the voice, in order to highlight its capacity to express intense and evocative emotions.
The themes of time and changing sound material, two concepts that have always been at the heart of my compositions, are also brought to the fore in this piece. I’m trying to convey an impression of floating, similar to the one you might feel after a major event: from the decay, only a few particles remain, witnesses of what once was.
The piece is structured in several movements, forming a kind of theme with variations. The first movement is suspended out of time, followed by a highly virtuosic and rhythmic second movement, then a third marked by floating glissandi and resonance. The fourth and final movement offers a harmonic reformulation of the initial theme.
With Canto, I sought to showcase the soloist in a sincere way, allowing him or her to play in a way that is both expressive and deeply intimate, where the song occupies a central place in the work, in an organic and inherent way, reflecting the lyrical nature of the piano itself.
