Chants haïku draws its atmosphere and structure from the essence of traditional Japanese haiku. The work consists of ten poetic movements, each separated by a double-bar measure—a timeless pause, a serene and unmistakable breath that cleanly delineates one haiku from the next.Performers may choose to play only a selection of these haikus in any order, creating a shorter version of the piece.
The haiku, a concise calligraphic form rooted in Japanese tradition, honors the ephemeral nature of all things and the emotions they stir. Often marked by a caesura—a pause reflected in the score—it is, above all, a capture of the present moment in its uniqueness and fragility, a world where permanence and impermanence coexist. A haiku is a portrait of “here and now,” framing the ordinary with stark simplicity to unveil the deep poetry of fleeting sensation.
