Biography
Czech composer Kryštof Mařatka lives and works in Prague and Paris. The versatility that marks his artistic activities, carried out between several countries, is often seen as a strong link he creates between varied cultural universes from which he draws inspiration or questions, while discovering new paths of musical expression. His works draw on a variety of sources, from precise and elaborate worlds – traditional world music, the birth of language in man, Paleolithic music and art – to broader worlds – literary (melodramas), instrumental or pedagogical (Philharmonie de Paris DEMOS, CNSM de Paris, Conservatoires de musique). Various arrangements and transcriptions complete the catalog of his works.
As a conductor, Kryštof Mařatka has appeared with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Nederlands Kamerorkest at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Prague Philharmonia Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra, the Polish National Radio Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Prague National Opera Orchestra and many others.
As a pianist, alongside his own works, he often highlights his passion for the music of Leoš Janáček, as well as for improvisation. In this way, he seeks to raise public awareness of the attractions of musical creation through the experience of the birth of a work lived by the audience in real time.
He was awarded the Prix Pierre Cardin by the Académie des Beaux-Arts for musical composition, and in 2007 a documentary film was directed and produced: Naissance d’un imaginaire (26 min., Karl More Productions), broadcast on the European television channel Mezzo.
