Histoire d’une Histoire

Conceived with Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat in mind, Histoire d’une Histoire seizes on the heritage of the Russian composer’s language, marked by a piercing rhythmic vitality and a melodic universe where the tonal scale, dear to the composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, rubs shoulders with total chromatics and a modality derived from Russian peasant songs.
From an overall sound marked by the homorhythmic interplay of percussion and piano, the piece welcomes the violin and clarinet in compact chords that extend over time. This initial organization opens up, leaving more and more room for silence, which plays a highly rhythmic role within the machinery already in place.
Gradually, this Stravinskian universe of the beginning will lead to my own universe as a composer, within which I try to create a polyphony in which each instrument evolves independently of the others, yet is part of a common sound result.
This piece was conceived as part of the French ensemble L’instant Donné’s performance of L’Histoire du Soldat.
