The title Les Eaux font Silence comes from a haiku by Yosa Buson. If you read the French translation of the title out loud you may be confused as to the subject of the work. The word “eaux” (water) sounds the same as “os” (bones); depending on which you decide to hear, the title of the poem changes drastically. In the same way, the piece articulates a certain confusion regarding the sound material, developing timbral variations alternating between the complementarity and the dissociation of timbres.
The second level of development is operated by a complex use of silence and other absences. These absences can be absences of timbre, register, pitch, or even of sound. Articulating the piece around absences leads to a non linear development that eliminates the possibility for predictability. The sound space will sometimes be saturated with distortion, while at other times be more contemplative.
