L’Étendue de l’Ombre

L’Étendue de l’Ombre was inspired by a passage in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel The Double. It concerns the scene in which the narrator sees his double for the first time. On his way home, through the snow, a silhouette approaches, then passes indifferently by, seemingly unaware of him. The narrator is overwhelmed by a strange stupor as he realizes that this figure looks exactly like him. I drew on this inner turmoil and the strangeness of this literary image to create a musical work conveying complex, ambiguous feelings. Worry, but also sweetness, nostalgia and exaltation, run through the work in an idea of perpetual motion, like a question without an answer.
