Postlude

The story of this piece reveals a friendship that has bound Patrick Langot and me together since childhood, against the backdrop of a shared passion for music. It was written and conceived to fit in with his first Praeludio monographic disc, blending epochs within the unity of the prelude, from Bach to Gubaidulina, via Gabrielli.
In a spirit not of contradiction, but of amusement, I decided to call this piece Postlude. It echoes the Baroque spirit of this free, open form. It consists of a slow, ternary theme, simply stated at the beginning, which, like a passacaglia, curls up on itself, varies constantly (each variation is announced by a letter in the score) and travels over a wide range of pitches and playing modes.
But this is no exercise in style. It resonates with the memory of my idea of a prelude; and perhaps the disintegration towards the end represented for me the desire to return to sound and its most indispensable setting: silence.
