Quiero is based on the book La femme et le pantin by Pierre Louÿs. This melody for mezzo-soprano is built around the figure of Concha, a sultry, sensual, free-spirited and shameless woman who reminds us of Carmen. The text I took from the novel begins: “Quiero is an astonishing verb that means everything. It’s to want, to desire, to love, it’s to seek and it’s to cherish”. This definition of love, according to Pierre Louÿs, comes as André declares his love for Concha, handing her an egg on which is written: Quiero.
This erotic scene takes place in Spain at the end of the 19th century, when Andalusian music was at its height: I wanted to mark this melody with a vocalization that flows freely around the word quiero, while remaining faithful to what the female character in the novel evokes for me: a bewitching, proud beauty, stripped of all morality.
