Sanctuaries – in the depths of cave paintings, concerto for violin and orchestra is freely inspired by the imprints of the most ancient human artistic activities ever found, prehistoric art. It is extraordinary to observe the extent to which Stone Age man was able to grasp the world around him. What unexpected, refined and skilful craftsmanship in this art, with such a fascinating inner force exuding from it! Do we understand it? Do we know how to decipher it?
The concerto is composed of five movements corresponding to five different French caves, home to the world’s oldest finds of prehistoric art – true treasures of humanity! Each of these five parts is the translation of my personal view of one of the concrete works found in these caves. The music is not intended to describe or imitate them, but rather to draw the listener’s attention to this archaic creative phenomenon of our ancestors, and thus touch on the exceptional, timeless values that link our distant past to our present. This approach, recurrent in my work as a composer, I have decided to call origINnovation.
