Why the title Sonate Réminiscence?
It’s an ode to the four 20th-century artists (Paul Cézanne, Pina Bausch, Francis Poulenc and Albert Camus) who dominate the piece. The musical and dramaturgical development reflects the work and career of each. The fourth movement, entitled Albert Camus, pays tribute to the writer and his many travels…
The performers will then find two distinct versions of the end of this movement: a refined final cadenza for the trio, and an ossia inviting the Indian sitar to take us on a journey on stage. This second version (which is actually the first) was specially composed for the Messiaen Trio, whose cellist Volodia Van Keulen is also a sitarist.
