Entre tus manos

Following a fortuitous meeting on the train, I came face to face with the artist Rolando Villazón. A week later, he commissioned a melody for tenor voice and piano, based on a sonnet (of my choice) by the Mexican author Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. I discovered the extraordinary avant-garde personality and poetry of this 17th-century woman: poet, playwright and Catholic nun. Her texts combine faith, spirituality, love and desire… unusual for the time!
The original title of the sonnet I’ve chosen to set to music is En que satisface un recelo con la retórica del llanto (In which he satisfies a doubt with the rhetoric of tears). I took the liberty of renaming the piece Entre tus manos (Between your hands), echoing the last words of the poem. For behind the modesty of her words, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz reveals the distress and exaltation of her heart. She places all these feelings of the human soul in our hands.
