While the title Les villes invisibles is borrowed from Italo Calvino’s book, the cities in question here are not imaginary oriental cities, but cinematic ones.
It was the titles rather than the films themselves that inspired me to write these musical reveries:
Quand la ville dort and the parallel world of night, the decadent Rome of Satyricon, the Hollywood ghosts of Fritz Lang, the teeming world of Satyajit Ray’s cities or the poignant loves of Bergman’s port city.
But for me, Invisible Cities is above all a tribute to film music, an unusual character that haunts our memories as moved spectators.
