Biography
Olivier Penard, born in 1974, discovered music through the cinema. His catalog, written mainly by self-taught composers, carries with it the need for narration, the evocation of images and the structuring of sequences.
A meticulous craftsman and demanding creator, he composes music at the crossroads of contemporary creation, minimalist trends, jazz and film music.
In a present where genres, styles and chapels merge, he attempts a personal synthesis between heritage and novelty: sensual, luminous harmony, a multi-colored blend of timbres, powerful rhythmic energy, high dramatic density – these are the different faces of his works, which are composed for orchestra, solo or choral voice, chamber music, theater, dance and film.
He joins forces with performers such as the Quatuor Debussy, Ensemble Contraste, Jonas Vitaud, Sonia Wieder-Atherton, Orlando Bass, Geneviève Laurenceau, Fabrice Bihan, Ayako Tanaka, Jean-Marc Fessard, Dana Ciocarlie, Patrick Langot and collaborates with singers such as Dame Felicity Lott (UK), Ariane Douguet, Christophe Crapez and Matthieu Lecroart (France), Stacie Dunlop (Canada) and Stephan Van Dyck (Belgium).
His works have been performed by the national orchestras of Lyon, Lille, Montpellier (Fabien Gabel), Toulouse (Christophe Mangou), Avignon (Samuel Jean) and the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (Jordan Gudefin), among others, l’orchestre Divertimento (Zahia Ziouani), l’Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, the choirs and orchestra of Flemish Radio, Le Jeune
Choeur de Paris (Laurence Equilbey), Les Cris de Paris (Geoffroy Jourdain), Sequenza 9. 3 (Catherine Simonpietri)…
In addition to composing, he is active as a conductor and producer of recordings. He also teaches musical culture at Paris conservatories.
A former artist-in-residence at Abbaye de la Prée, he is currently a laureate of the Fondation Banque Populaire.
