Paradisiers

Incredible little birds with eccentric plumage, bursting with brilliant colors… Sometimes funny, impressive, even terrifying! They sing, dance, build and choreograph marvelous nuptial parades… Welcome to the re-creative world of the Paradisiers, which I invite you to discover through the writing of this piece for solo percussionist.
Given the environment in which these bird species live (mostly from the equatorial forests of New Guinea), the percussion timbres chosen are predominantly woody and low-resonant. Nevertheless, metallic instruments such as tam-tam and cymbals punctuate the bird’s jerky speech, lending a certain horizontality.
The narrative unfolds in four distinct movements. It begins with the introduction of our bird, who settles down on a branch to meticulously clean it (not forgetting to garnish the ground with a few colorful berries), interspersed with a few dance steps and warm-up coos. Determined to impress a damsel, he set about the tedious task of staging his little show. And just as his ideas are coming together, a detractor appears on the scene… A rival suitor? A troublemaker?… A snake?! I’ll leave it to your imagination. Triumphant in their joust, the bird of paradise
(finally) gets the attention he wants, and unveils his daring parade…
