Brèches, my second string quartet, continues in some ways the preoccupations developed within my first quartet Neige de Jakuchu – © 2017 Éditions Musicales Artchipel – by questioning both a particular pictorial universe and independent formal experimentations. For this first quartet, it was my interpretation of the work of Japanese painter Ito Jakuchu (1716 – 1800) that was set against musical structures derived from literary inventions by Antoine Volodine.
The gaps opened up by the painting are answered by freer imitative parts, and this tension gives rise to a gradual disappearance of the composer’s intentions and power… Aurélien Dumont
