Brèches

Brèches, my second string quartet, continues in some ways the preoccupations developed within my first quartet Neige de Jakuchu – © 2017 Éditions Musicales Artchipel – by questioning both a particular pictorial universe and independent formal experimentations. For this first quartet, it was my interpretation of the work of Japanese painter Ito Jakuchu (1716 – 1800) that was set against musical structures derived from literary inventions by Antoine Volodine.                                                                                                                   .                                                                                                                                              .                                                                                                                                            The gaps opened up by the painting are answered by freer imitative parts, and this tension gives rise to a gradual disappearance of the composer’s intentions and power…            Aurélien Dumont
