This work is a kind of prelude to my small-format opera project inspired by Ryoko Sekiguchi’s The Dark Voice and The Sūtra of the Heart.
The composition is built around excerpts from this text written in ancient Japanese, which posits the Buddhist concept of the emptiness of all things and of all physical and non-physical phenomena. Emptiness is not non-existence, nothingness, but the absence of substantial, fixed and permanent character. Buddhism considers that nothing that exists has an intrinsic reality, and that everything is mutable and in permanent mutation. Thus, emptiness is linked to the constant mutability of all that exists. It is not empty, but filled with what is not, with the imaginary presence of what is missing…..
