Biography
Pascale Jakubowski is a french composer born in Algeria.
Her deep connection to her native country and roots inspires her to forge links between different cultures and art forms.
In France, she studied piano, clarinet, and singing. She initially pursued philosophy before deciding to share her own compositions and improvisations in concert. Alongside improvisational musicians such as Lol Coxhill, Louis Sclavis, Henri Texier, Michel Portal, and Tamia Valmont, she also collaborated with world music performers like Ragunath Panigrahi and Doudou N’diaye Rose.
At the Conservatoire National de Région in Bordeaux, she continued her studies in lyric singing, composition, electroacoustics, musical writing, and analysis, earning the highest honors. In composition, she received guidance from Michel Decoust and Hugues Dufourt, as well as encouraging letters from Henri Dutilleux. Always passionate about sound exploration, she delved into the computer tools developed by IRCAM in Paris.
During residencies in Mayenne, Ille-et-Vilaine, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and with the Orchestre National Avignon-Provence, she infused a touch of utopia into her work by creating scores that brought together musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds. In June 2005, SACEM awarded her the Pierre and Germaine Labole Prize.
She also responded to invitations highlighting the most singular and virtuosic aspects of her musical language. One of her piano works, Alliance, was selected for the Dutilleux Competition in 2004. In 2022, she was a finalist for the Grand Prix Lycéen des Compositeurs for Iridescences, a piece for theorbo and electronics commissioned by Anne Montaron and Radio France. In 2025, during the national quarter-hour of reading, one of her graphic scores was projected at the Panthéon as part of Nicolas Frize’s installation, Les pensées géantes (Giant Thoughts).
Her works have been commissioned by the French government, Radio France, festivals, departments, soloists, instrumental ensembles, and orchestras. They have premiered both in France and abroad and have been featured in programs dedicated to her on France Musique and France Culture.
