Louis Vierne was born on October 8, 1870 in Poitiers, almost blind from birth due to a congenital cataract. Despite this handicap, he studied music from an early age and entered the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, where he learned organ, piano and composition.

Louis Vierne was born on October 8, 1870 in Poitiers, almost blind from birth due to a congenital cataract. Despite this handicap, he studied music from an early age and entered the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, where he learned organ, piano and composition.
In 1900, he became titular organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, a post he held until his death. He also taught organ at the Paris Conservatoire, training several generations of organists.
